Thief of bullion coins trapped in the cellar

A thirty-year-old man was arrested for breaking into a house which belongs to a famous investor. The incident happened a few weeks ago, at three o"clock at night, in the city centre. The family had left for a trip and the only person sleeping in the house was their seventeen-year-old daughter. The thief entered through the bathroom window which had been left ajar. He must have known that the family owned some valuable gold bullion. What is more, he knew very well where those coins were hidden. The police suspect he had been observing the house for a long time. The girl woke up as she heard the man ascending the stairs. He was heading towards the study on the first floor. She immediately stood up and left her room to see what was going on. When the thief saw her, he stared running down the stairs. In the end, he reached the cellar. He was unaware of the fact that he was putting himself in a trap. The girl locked the door behind him and soon he found out there was no other way out. He did not manage to steal any bullion coins. The girl called the police as soon as possible. They arrived ten minutes later and arrested the thief. He had been trying to get out of the cellar through a tiny window but this, of course, was impossible. The family have just installed an alarm system which will prevent similar incidents in the future.
